1947 SPEEDWAY PACEMAKER
Designed by record setting racer Joe Olender, the SPEEDWAY PACEMAKER was produced by Standard
Machine Works of Indianapolis Indiana beginning in 1947. Joe, hot off of his record setting run of 103.09 mph in 1945, incorporated many of the successful components and design of his early prototype car into the production of the Speedway Pacemaker. This restored example is powered by an ignition Hornet (serial # V10110) motor and is complete with coil, condenser, fuel tank, switch, battery box and wiring. The grill is custom made. The original Bakelite body has no damage, the paint is brilliant, the graphics are hand lettered except for the Speedway Pacemaker decal on the right side of the body. The magnesium wheels are original, the tires are replacements. This is an exceptional example of an iconic post-war proto.
1930's BANTAM DIRT TRACK RACER
~SOLD ~
This outstanding example of a 1930's Bantam DIRT TRACK RACER is a custom build; it is NOT a Chinese reproduction. The car is powered by a 4 stroke overhead valve Saito engine, driving the rear wheels through a centrifugal clutch and complete bevel gear gearbox. The fuel tank is in place with a custom fuel shut off. The nose, body, and frame are aluminum; the body is cast in two pieces; it is impossible to see the seam on the car surface. The louvered hood and pan are formed aluminum; the hood is hinged and held in place with leather straps. There are no wooden pieces on this car, except for the seat under the upholstery. Check the details in the photos. This car has been well cared for and displays beautifully.
1946 MELCRAFT
As stated in the Bob Ames book VINTAGE MINIATURE RACING CARS; "The seldom-seen Melcraft was manufactured in small numbers in Saginaw Michigan probably during 1946". This example features the factory produced wood body which is in remarkable condition. The unique feature of this car is the fact that it is powered by a Brown Jr converted to glow operation; yes, that is a glow plug atop the cylinder head. While the Melcraft cars are rare and difficult to find, it is even more difficult to locate one that has actually been raced!
The spur gear drivetrain turns through smoothly, the Brown has excellent compression. The car is complete with a fuel tank and a battery terminal connection on the dash to heat the glow plug without removing the body. This is a well built, as raced Melcraft......a rare find indeed!
1949 BRITISH RAIL RACER
~ SOLD ~
This British rail track racer is powered by a small displacement ED diesel engine powering the rear wheels through a bevel gear gearbox. Following the war (WWII) a group called the "Raildromers" developed the first working indoor high banked oval rail track in Britain, and the hobby soon grew. This #26 car is an original car from this era. The car is complete with the ED diesel, fuel tank, needle valve, adjustable front axle, rail guides (called "zonkers" by the Brits), a dash with steering wheel and the driver awaiting the green flag. The body is of formed aluminum, the frame rails, mechanical pieces, and wheels are aluminum; the original rubber tires are hardened and show cracking, the left rear is flat spotted. The old photo in the listing is from the April 1949 issue of MODEL CARS depicting three cars on track. The car displays beautifully with incredible character.
1946 DOOLING F
You are looking at a 1946 DOOLING F TETHER CAR; in GREAT ORIGINAL CONDITION. The car is 16" long and features a two piece magnesium body, two piece knee action front axle, a rear gearbox containing bevel gears, original flywheel, connector and "dog bone" driveshaft. The body and pan are finished in the original hammer tone paint finish which was used on the early production cars. The grille is original as are the wheels and tires. This F car is powered by a McCoy .60 black case ignition engine; the driveline turns through smoothly; the engine has excellent compression. The spark plug, needle valve, and tether cable brackets are in place. The car is missing a fuel tank and the electric components; most often these pieces were used by the racer on his next car. This is a beautiful original Dooling F in hammer tone finish; it displays beautifully.
1939 DOOLING MERCURY DELUXE
DENNYMITE POWERED
The second car produced by the Dooling Brothers was the Mercury Deluxe, commonly known as the rear drive. This exceptional example features the four wheel coil spring suspension and cast aluminum body, nose, and frame with formed aluminum pan and hood. The nose features a custom grill; the leather covered seat back is in place. The wheels and tires are original GARDNERS, the tires are hard. The ignition Super Cyclone engine drives the rear wheels through bevel gears; the engine has good compression, the driveline turns through smoothly, the fuel tank, coil, condenser, wiring and shut off switch are in the car. This ORIGINAL un-restored "Rear Drive" has outstanding 85 year old patina. The car is simply outstanding !
